Ok, so there are many of us at night sitting and coding by ourselves. I mean, we have IM open, we tweet, but I think it's easier to get distracted and it's nothing like having a really awesome dev right next to you. You know? Having that person a question or topic away. What about a group of devs? That would be great.
So, I've done a little research and I'm going to put something together. This isn't just for questions, it's for commentary, discussions, and everything else you would do if you threw a bunch of developers in the room for a few hours. We can call it a WAN party?
I don't know if there will be any interest, however, I looked into Skype conference calling and it looks like this is do-able. So, the first scheduled Girl Developer (not just for girl developers) WAN party is this Weds at 7:30PM EST. My skype ID is sarajo81. This can be just audio or video as well I haven't decided. I think this will depend on if I want to blowdry my hair Wednesday morning(kidding).
If you are interested either friend me on Skype and show up, or shoot me an email. If this works out maybe we can make it a weekly thing.

I have to work late Wednesday, so I was in, up till when you said Skype. Not that I -couldn't- use a mic at the office - but I don't really want to.
ReplyDeletePlus, I find voice very distracting compared to music when I'm trying to work, but chat to be just the right level of distraction - I can put it off until I get this one thought down.

I would like to see developers do more social networking. Programmers who work in social isolation don't pick up good work habits like unit testing or source control. There are hundreds of developer communities but they are all too professional and impersonal. The only place where I've seen a real online community form is on YouTube among vloggers. Vloggers really get to know each other and collaborate on projects. From a sociological perspective, it is clear that vlogging is a very effective means of building community online.
ReplyDeleteSo I recommend that you vlog on YouTube. Stickam is also popular among vloggers because it allows them to video conference. I've been contributing to the Vloggerheads web site which is run by a psychologist as an experiment in online community.
I drink while I code ... if that doesn't get in the way I just might check this out.

ReplyDeleteObviously I missed this but I don't use skype anyway. I usually use IRC for quick help or StackOverflow.com. If I want to voicechat I'd probably consider using a program like Ventrilo, which gamers use.
This is a really good idea, I've done something similar in the past with friends at school for study groups and it generally turns out well.

Hmm, you can host a public conference for late night developers on Paltalk or Merlinko for this.
