Throw 'Em Up For HTML 5

If you've talked to me about web development for more than 5 minutes you've heard my rant about how "JavaScript is the future." I have an ongoing love affair with JS, it's been around since nearly the beginning of the web, it died a little when we came to know abstractions like Flash and, more recently, Silverlight. However, one thing we've all come to realize is that the cost of those platforms. There is overhead, the need for browser add-ons, the difficulty it gives search engines with indexing content. As a developer, a purely web developer, I can't reconcile asking my users to deal with this flaws.

Enter: Javascript. When it comes to floating elements, and snazzy page manipulation JS is the answer. Our savior from the downloads, our bail-out from intros and restaurant music (sorry, but there is something to be said about Flash being nearly synonymous with the classical music playing and browser hogging restaurant websites that we've all seen too much of). I, personally, spend a large portion of my time elbow deep in JS and JQuery. That being said, JS can't produce the embedded video issues that....

...HTML 5 CAN! Check it. Not only can you implement the video that flash can, you can much better integrate it into your markup. If you have the passion that I do for the DOM, you can really appreciate the purity that HTML 5 offers you.

Why bring this up now? This is semi-old hat for all of us, and a battle we've been fighting for a while. I bring it up for a few reasons, I intend to invest some time in learning some HTML 5 myself (I did it with Flash, and I can't preach the 5 without being able to do some of it myself.) Also, I came in contact with this awesome site tonight. So, I had to contribute, and give my respects to the future of web development. Throw 'em up:

  2. Does the current version of IE (most popular browser) support it? That's the bottom line, no?

@s actually, the most popular browser in the world is IE8 or Firefox 3.6, depending on where you get your statistics. what you meant to say is that IE is the most popular browser vendor. but most importantly, HTML5/CSS3 is usable @ the time of this post. There are JavaScript libraries specifically built for older browsers, check out html5shiv.js and modernizr.js
@sara yo, imma go ahead and disagree with you about using JavaScript for floats. but i hear ya.

  7. I think it's funny that you blame Flash for background music on a website as if programming Actionscript somehow implies a love of stupid site elements. While many Flash developers lack good taste it is usually the client that wants some shitty house music on the page. When we're building Flash like sites in JS and HTML5 this request will not change.
My current concern with HTML5 is the same concern I have with HTML4 and the current state of JS and CSS. Each browser implements them uniquely and subtly different. For some reason everyone is glossing over the reason why abstracted plugins like Flash were created and popularized in the first place. When I have to support a zillion browsers and browser versions Im going to write in whatever gives me the most coverage. One of the main reasons Flash sites perform so poorly has to do with the low barrier of entry for development. Inexperienced devs write sloppy unoptimizef code. This will not change with HTML5. If anything I would imagine it getting worse.

  8. html5 is interesting to me it seems to mean different things to different people.
for a few people its yet another lost cause to get very excited about.
for a few others, its a chance to have a laugh at those people as they desperately try to lift it off the ground, though sheer willpower and zeal.
for apple, html5 is a a fig leaf over their efforts to control the internet, and in the name of increasing their bottom line attempting to neuter any competition to their appstore.
its important to remember that for everyone else (99.9%) html5 means nothing and will continue to mean nothing. they'll just keep using Flash without even realizing it.

  25. I often dream of that clueless closet app as well. (My first Java applet was a dress-up game.) I think it'd make a good mobile app - take pics of your clothes or draw them, catalog them, remember your favorite outfits. Bonus if it super-imposes them on you and tweets them out for ratings.

  32. Barfi is a sweet made of dried milk with ground cashews or pistachios. It is customary to attach a thin layer of edible silver foil as decoration.
"barfi" is not the word used, when referring to any or all types of indian sweets.
Mithai is the hindi word used for sweet dishes.
These yummy treats have been in our families for generations:)
