up-diggity-date

My boss was a bit startled this morning when he walked in and saw me sleeping on the couch, lol. I tried to explain that it's a very "developer" thing to do, that there is a lot to be done in only a few weeks, but I think he may just think I'm a nut job. Whatever, I got on a real tear late last night. Got "in the zone" if you will.

I have a very good friend who is turning into an amazing resource in this stressful and intense time. It's great having someone who I can ask questions to who has been here before. I love this, I love building my own application (it's my company's but you get the drift.) Tomorrow I start looking at production servers. I hear Rackspace is the bees knees, but a bit expensive. Anyone have any reccomendations?

I got a new "Girl Developer" logo. See below. It was made by a great kid named Lloyd Humphereys and you can see a link to his blog on the right. Check it out, he's really bright and resourceful. I may put him on retainer.

Wanna see a girl that kicks some serious butt? Leahculver.com - check it. She built Pownce, which apparently everyone uses and I'm the last one to the party. I love the interface, and the idea, and the fact that a GIRL built it.

It's not that I feel un-included by the boys... I've come to the conclusion that everyone has really welcomed me into the community and I honestly think they aren't thinking "stupid girl" when I am around. It's been great, but, being in the minority of women in this field it's great seeing another girl kicking *** and taking names. Its really inspired me to keep on trucking when things get stressful.

Off to bed! (at home) Happy developing.

Oh, and PS, our president has a website. He wants to keep us informed. Nerds FTW!!!!

PPS cellphones.org named me one of the top 25 "Geek Blogs" .. how cool is that? Here is a link.

  1. I have hosted websites at both Rackspace and HostMySite. Both are good for the basics, and HostMySite went down less than Rackspace. However to get something done with the physical network, such as router, backup, etc you need to file a ticket with HostMySite, but with Rackspace they have a really slick interface to handle it all.
Basically you get what you pay for, but if you want an excellent server for a good price go with HostMySite.

  2. I have all my stuff at Webfaction - their dashboard is a little clumsy, but they're very developer-friendly. And if you're at all interested in rolling your own (Linux distro, that is), I hear nothing but raves about SliceHost.

  5. Hosting at leaseweb is also an intresting option. They offer great service for a good price. I like reading you're blog it's good to see some diversity in a sector with 90 % males.

  6. Why not do the Godaddy thing until you have something up and running with plenty of hits. They are extremly cheap for shared hosting or at least until you ever several thousand page views monthly.
Then I would say, head over to http://crystaltech.com.
I believe the are the best in the business with plenty of support.

  7. There is also a href=http://www.tipjoy.comTipJoy/a which is founded by Ivan and Abbey Kirigin. (Abbey is a girl too which is why I thought it was related.) They're great folks. Iono, as soon as you mentioned Pownce, I thought of all the nice startup folk that I've bumped into in the past few years. There's also Heather Powazek.
I think a recurring trend that I see in female developers is that they tend to be married to big-time male developers.
    Sort of weird, no?

  8. I'll second the recommendation of HostMySite.com. I'm using them for my stuff and I have to say that I am very impressed with the quality and level of their support, their prices, and their uptime. Overall, great value for the money.
